AMHERST RESERVOIR
La Verne, CA | 25,000 Square Feet | back to top

The challenge was to rehabilitate and reline 2.5 million gallon leaking partially buried circular concrete reservoir that was constructed in the 1930’s which was in poor condition. The reservoir floor was separating from the walls resulting in the subgrade being washed away. Civiltec Engineering, Inc., City of La Verne, CETCO Remediation Technologies, and Howard Ridley Company (LIQUID BOOT® Approved Applicator). The reservoir was rehabilitated by Howard Ridley Company in 1995 and consisted of removal of portions of the concrete floor, pressure grouting portions of the subgrade, installation of a subdrain system in the areas of the concrete floor removal and then lining the complete interior with LIQUID BOOT®. The project engineer and the City had analyzed several reservoir rehabilitation methods, potential costs and down time, versus demolition of the reservoir and replacement. The City of La Verne saved time and money by relining the reservoir with LIQUID BOOT® as well as adding at least 10 years life to a reservoir slated for demolition.

CALIFORNIA AQUEDUCT
Throughout the State of California | 2.5 Million Square Feet | back to top

The California Aqueduct was built more than 25 years ago and runs over 800 miles (1,290 km) from Sacramento to Southern California. The original canal was lined with four-inch thick un-reinforced concrete. As part of the State’s on-going maintenance program, sections of the canal are relined where water is leaking through the old concrete. The repairs consist of placing a waterproof liner over the existing concrete then installing a new concrete liner over the waterproof membrane. The waterproof liner had to be non-toxic, durable, and installed quickly. Schedule was of critical importance as for each day the canal was shut down, the State lost significant water revenue and the downstream users were cut off from a continuous supply of water. The General Contractor also faces significant penalties for each day they were late in completing the repairs. State of California Department of Water Resources, various General Contractors, various LIQUID BOOT® Approved Applicators, and CETCO Remediation Technologies. After the section of the canal was drained and all loose debris removed, a four oz. non-woven geotextile was placed over the old concrete. 80 mils (2mm) of LIQUID BOOT® was then applied to the geotextile. Another layer of four oz. Non-woven geotextile was placed over the LIQUID BOOT® membrane. Finally, a new four-inch layer of concrete was pumped onto the LIQUID BOOT® liner. The first installation was so successful that LIQUID BOOT® has been used on approximately five additional California aqueduct repair projects aggregating more than 2,500,000 Sq. Ft. (232,300 m2).

ELY RESERVOIR
Ely, NV | 25,000 Square Feet | back to top

The challenge was to rehabilitate and reline an above grade 2.5 million gallon concrete reservoir. After the City drained the reservoir, it was evident that over the years, the concrete has been badly eroded, especially on the walls. City of Ely, Walter Engineering, Certified Coatings and CETCO Remediation Technologies. Certified Coatings prepared the concrete and then sprayed and 80 mil membrane of LIQUID BOOT® coating the floor, walls and underside of the roof. The use of LIQUID BOOT® versus the competitive product saved the City thousands of dollars in installed costs. LIQUID BOOT® was also installed in about half the time expected which allowed the City to get its reservoir back in line earlier than they had anticipated.

SONOMA COUNTY EQUALIZATION BASINS
Sonoma, CA | 100,000 Square Feet | back to top

The Sonoma County Water Agency had two equalization basins lined with old gunite that was severely cracked, resulting in significant leaking. The two basins were over 100,000 Sq. Ft. (9,300m2). Sonoma County Water Agency, Fargo Company, Inc. (LIQUID BOOT® Approved Applicator), and CETCO Remediation Technologies. As the gunite was severely cracked and extremely rough, a stitch boned polyester fabric was laid into an embedding emulsion, then 80 mils (2mm) of LIQUID BOOT® was sprayed over the reinforced embedding emulsion. The leaking was stopped and the Water Agency incurred significant cost savings over alternative solutions. LIQUID BOOT® is water based with no solvents and no VOCs which eliminated any risk that the polystyrene would be damaged. More importantly, the use of LIQUID BOOT® for this application ensured that water quality would not be compromised.

SUNNY SLOPE RESERVOIR
Pasadena, CA | 40,000 Square Feet | back to top

The Sunny Slope Water Company has a four million gallon below grade concrete reservoir, which was built in the 1920s. The reservoir was in generally good condition, but required reparations. The Water Company made a decision to line the old concrete with a waterproof membrane in order to extend the useful life of the reservoir. A major challenge was how to provide a low permeability liner instead around 125 steel columns (penetrations) holding up the roof. Naturally, the membrane had to be NSF 61 approved for potable water. Sunny Slope Water Company, Harper & Associates (Design Engineers), Gergen Construction (LIQUID BOOT® Approved Applicator), and CETCO Remediation Technologies. After the steel columns were reconditioned and coated with an NSF 61 approved metal coating, LIQUID BOOT® was applied over the entire concrete surface and approximately six inches up each column. As a spray-applied system, LIQUID BOOT® provided a simple and efficient method of waterproofing around the numerous penetrations. The membrane was installed at a significant savings of both time and money.

UNIVERSAL STUDIOS WATERWORLD
Hollywood, CA | 25,000 Square Feet | back to top

Universal Studios Theme Park was converting its old Miami Vice Water Show to a new show, Water World. The challenge was to provide a fully adhered low permeability liner beneath a new, structural shotcrete liner. The project was complicated by numerous concrete columns (penetrations) and by the need to transition the liner from existing concrete walls onto an earthen substrate. Finally, the membrane could not emit any VOC's or fumes during installation, as the park remained open to the public. As with all renovations, schedule and performance was critical. The team included Turner Construction, Eberhard Roofing (LIQUID BOOT® Approved Applicator), and CETCO Remediation Technologies. LIQUID BOOT® was selected as the under slab liner. A 4oz. Non-woven geotextile was placed over the earth substrate and connected to the concrete walls and columns. LIQUID BOOT® was then sprayed onto the concrete and geotextile. The membrane was then covered with structural shotcrete.
